To My Daughter on Her Third Birthday…

To Mara,
My darling daughter.

I can’t believe it has already been three years since you arrived and forever changed our lives for the better. Three beautiful, amazing , magical, wonderful, drama-filled, chaotic {in the most fun way} years.
To say this past year has been a challenge would be an understatement.
You have shown me a lot about myself, parenting, how much patience I have, and don’t have. But the most amazing thing that has developed this past year is your BIG personality.
Sure, you have many shades of shy when it comes to strangers. You’ve been friendly but ever so cautious since day one and it’s just your nature. But when it’s just us, you are anything but shy.
My Lil’ Chip, you are something special
In many ways, we are a lot alike: You love music, and using your imagination. You are fiercely independent and couldn’t care less what anyone thinks of you. You love to put together wacky outfits. Twinning is winning or Disney Princess for the day. You are one of a kind.
You are such a bookworm and love a story. If we’re hanging out at home, you always have a book {or ten} by your side, and you are always ready for a bedtime read. I hope you keep this trend up. Keep reading and imagining. I’m a believer that if you can read well, you can do anything well. Reading can take your mind places you never knew existed.
But regardless of those smarts, you are stubborn and this year has had many ups and downs. You’re definitely mine, you have my temper, and strong resistance to do what’s good for you. Medicine and sleep to name a couple.
You have grown up SO much this year. I’m highly aware that we’re entering “threenager” territory. Just when I’m about to pull my hair out, you do something unbelievably cute or funny and it makes the tough times melt away. Thankfully you are about 80% cute and only 20% trouble.

A bit more about who you are at this very moment:
        •   You are not a morning person, however you could get that from your mum!
        •   You love to sing. Let It Go, You’re Welcome, Rain, Rain Go Away and Happy Birthday are often in your repertoire.
        •   You love giving cuddles to Babe & Pap each night before bed. And you’re such a wee chatterbox stalling for time. There's no-one thirstier than you at bedtime.
        •   You are such a little mummy to ALL of your dolls, making sure they’re dressed and fed and comfortable in their beds!
        •   You love being outside, playing in the snow or splashing in puddles
        •   You love watching movies and cuddling in on the sofa. We’ve watched Frozen, Moana, Brave and Tangled too many times to count. And we’re still watching Lava, must be a thousand times at least now.
       •    You love to draw, colour and paint, we’re building up quite the collection.
       •    You love ice cream, Cheerios and Happy Hippos.

You are currently doing the dance between still being our baby and needing us next to you at all times, and wanting so badly the big girl independence. Please know that mummy and I are here to hold your hand every step of the way. Keep on laughing and learning in the year ahead.

Love always,

Daddy
